On April 23rd, 2024, the African Pro-Poor Tourism Development Centre (APTDC) organized a stakeholder meeting at the Modern South Hotel Diani. The objective of the meeting was to sensitize stakeholders on the Go Blue Tourism and Cultural Heritage project. The meeting also introduced the sub-grantees and their tourism and cultural heritage products to stakeholders. Additionally, another objective was to discuss stakeholders’ opportunities for linkages, networking, and support for sub-grantees.
The project’s sub-grantees namely, Shifoga, Matuga Arts Troupe, Gazi women, Kisite community boat operators, and Shimba Hills Forest Guides Association were also represented.
The stakeholders present for the meeting were representatives from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Tourism Regulatory Authority, Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute – KMFRI, Base Titanium and Kenya Wildlife Services. The meeting was also graced by the presence of Kwale’s County director of tourism, Mr. Paul Musila.
Each sub-grantee introduced their product and the support they sought to increase sustainability. Additionally, the stakeholders presented the opportunities available within their work area, for linkages, networking, and support.
“The market keeps on changing every day. We need to evolve,” Mr. Paul Musila stated. He urged the sub-grantees to keep embracing the new trends like marketing on websites and social media sites for more visibility.
By the end of the meeting, the sub-grantees who had aired the challenges they face in their day-to-day operations had gotten some relief, and some of their challenges were tackled. The stakeholders were eager to clarify all questions raised and resolve to continue supporting the small businesses.
